Plus the San Juan National Forest is accessible throughout the region for everything from hiking and biking, to fishing and boating. In addition to the archeological sites of Mesa Verde, two national monuments, Howenweep and Canyons of the Ancients, house more Ancient Puebloan ruins, and camping. You can camp directly at Mesa Verde in its Morefield Campground, or opt for a number of private RV parks and forest service campgrounds around Cortez, Mancos and Dolores. The landmark-rich region welcomes explorers throughout the year, and is especially popular during the warmer spring, summer and fall. Along with neighbor Dolores, these three towns offers an abundance of outdoor recreation, especially amazing camping. Tucked away between Cortez and Mancos in Southwest Colorado, Mesa Verde is the state’s second most visited national park (after RMNP).
